The Game
What is Black History Salute?
Black History Salute is a fast-paced card game and a miniature archive in one deck. Thirty-two real lives from nearly 2,000 years of Black British history, each one scored, sourced and ready to be argued over. You play the stats, read the salutes aloud, and leave the table knowing more than when you sat down.
How do you play?
Every figure carries three scores: Cultural Impact, Achievement and Legacy. Deal the deck face down, look only at your top card, and let the lead player call a stat. Highest score wins the round, takes the cards, and reads the winner’s salute aloud. Collect the whole deck and you are the Black History Champion. Short on time? The Quick Game crowns a winner fast.
How long does a game take?
As quick or as epic as the table decides. The Quick Game settles it fast; the full battle for all 32 cards earns the title of Black History Champion. Either way, the stories are doing their work with every round.
How many players can play?
Two to six players share one deck. Two makes it a duel. Six makes it a debate. Either way, somebody leaves the table with a new favourite figure.
What age is it for?
Recommended for ages 10 and up. Younger historians are welcome alongside an adult or older sibling who can help with the reading and the context.
What is included in the box?
Thirty-two hero cards, a How to Play card, and one customisable hero card waiting for the name you think belongs in the deck. Cards are 70mm x 120mm in a premium print finish, gilded in gold on all four edges. Made to be played, and made to be kept.
The Content
Where do the stories come from?
Every figure is built from reputable academic, educational and primary sources, checked before a single card was printed. No myths, no guesswork. The aim is accuracy, balance and agency: real lives, told with the respect of getting the facts right.
Why these 32 figures?
The Vanguard Edition spans almost 2,000 years, from Roman York to the present day: emperors and organisers, artists and medical pioneers. Each figure earned their card through measurable cultural impact, documented achievement and a legacy that refuses to fade.
Is it only for Black History Month?
No. One month was never going to hold 2,000 years. This history belongs in everyday knowledge, on the table any night of the year.
Will there be more editions?
Yes. The Vanguard Edition is the opening hand. Future editions will bring new figures, new themes and new eras to the table.
The Vanguard & ordering
What is the Vanguard Edition?
The Vanguard Edition is the first edition: 500 decks, each hand-numbered and gold-gilded, never to be printed this way again. Joining the Vanguard puts you on the waitlist for that first run, ahead of everyone else.
Is joining the waitlist free?
Completely free, always. Joining the Vanguard costs nothing and holds your place in the queue. If you want to go further, a small deposit reserves one of the 500 decks outright.
How much will it cost?
The launch price is £24.99. UK delivery is £5.95 by Royal Mail Tracked 48 with Signature, sent in protective packaging. International delivery is available to selected countries.
What is the deposit, and is it refundable?
An optional £10 deposit reserves one of the 500 hand-numbered decks outright. It is fully refundable on request at any time before launch, and it comes straight off the £24.99 price when you order.
When does it launch?
The Vanguard first edition launches on 25 September 2026. The Founding 500 order first; once those decks are claimed, this edition is gone for good.
What is your returns policy?
Change of mind is covered: cancel within 14 days of receiving your order, then you have a further 14 days to return it, and we refund within 14 days of the deck coming back. Faulty, damaged or incorrect items come back at our cost. The Returns & Cancellations page has the full detail.
