Roman York 350 CE

A woman from Roman Africa is laid to rest under ivory bangles and gold, among the wealthiest in the city.

The Ivory Bangle Lady card

Roman York, around 350 CE

Buried under ivory and gold, among the wealthiest in the city. Her bones show she grew up in Africa. Roman Britain was already a meeting of the world.

Olaudah Equiano card

1745 to 1797

Enslaved as a child and sold across the Atlantic, Olaudah Equiano bought his own freedom, then wrote the book that helped turn Britain against the slave trade.

Walter Tull card

1888 to 1918

Walter Tull played professional football for Tottenham, then led men into battle on the Western Front. He was killed at the Somme, aged 29. His body was never recovered.

Olive Morris card

1952 to 1979

Olive Morris organised for housing, for women, and against unjust policing across 1970s Britain, and built movements that outlived her. She was 27 when she died.
