I wanted to create something people could gather around. Something tactile. Something beautiful. Something that could move Black British history out of the margins and onto the table.

Enslaved as a child and sold across the Atlantic, Olaudah Equiano bought his own freedom, then wrote the book that helped turn Britain against the slave trade.
Walter Tull played professional football for Tottenham, then led men into battle on the Western Front. He was killed at the Somme, aged 29. His body was never recovered.
Olive Morris organised for housing, for women, and against unjust policing across 1970s Britain, and built movements that outlived her. She was 27 when she died.
